The Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers have engaged in advanced discussions on a potential trade that would send James Harden to Cleveland in exchange for Darius Garland, according to sources. If completed, the deal would mark a significant swap of former All-Star guards at very different stages of their careers.

Harden, 36, has been a key piece for the Clippers this season and continues to log heavy minutes. The veteran guard is averaging 25.4 points per game while playing 35.4 minutes per night, serving as one of Los Angeles’ primary offensive engines. However, Harden was not in the lineup for the Clippers on Monday, with head coach Tyronn Lue telling reporters that he was away from the team for personal reasons.

Garland, 26, has endured a difficult, injury-plagued season in Cleveland. He missed the Cavaliers’ first seven games while recovering from offseason toe surgery and has been sidelined again since Jan. 16 due to an ankle sprain. Despite the setbacks, Garland is averaging 18 points per game this season and remains one of the league’s most skilled young playmakers when healthy.

Sources say Cleveland has pushed for additional draft compensation as part of the talks, requesting either a first-round pick or a future pick swap to balance the deal. The Clippers, however, are limited in the draft assets they can move and have so far rejected those requests.

From Cleveland’s perspective, acquiring Harden would signal a win-now move aimed at bolstering the team’s playoff offense with a proven scorer and facilitator. For Los Angeles, Garland would offer a younger, long-term option in the backcourt, though his recent injury history remains a concern.

While discussions are described as advanced, no deal is considered imminent, and talks could still stall over draft compensation. As the situation develops, both teams appear to be weighing the risk of change against the potential reward of reshaping their guard rotations for the rest of the season and beyond.
