Charlize Theron took the stage at the 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Milan to deliver a powerful call for peace and unity before a global audience.
The Oscar-winning actor said she was sharing “a message of peace” inspired by Nelson Mandela, whom she described as her beloved countryman. Theron read a quote emphasizing inclusion and equality across cultures and identities.
“Peace is not just the absence of conflict,” the statement read. “Peace is the creation of an environment where all can flourish regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference.”
Theron’s appearance came during a ceremony that unfolded against a backdrop of heightened global political tensions. Some officials and delegations, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and members of the Israeli Olympic team, were met with audible boos from parts of the crowd when they were introduced.
The reaction reflected broader international protests and criticism tied to ongoing political disputes, immigration policies, and conflicts abroad, including the war in Gaza.
Despite the tensions, Olympic organizers emphasized the event’s core themes of peace, unity, and international cooperation, values that were echoed throughout the ceremony’s performances and speeches.
